Why Is My Computer Slow? A 5-Minute Check

Most slow computers come down to four things: it has been on too long, one app is hogging resources, the drive is nearly full, or too much launches at login. Work through these in order.

  1. Restart it properly: Start → Power → Restart, not sleep or closing the lid. Long uptimes cause strange behavior that a restart clears.
  2. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk. One runaway app is often the culprit; close it and see if things improve.
  3. Check free space. A nearly full drive slows Windows noticeably, so try to keep roughly 15–20% free. The Downloads folder is the first place to clean up.
  4. Open the Startup apps tab in Task Manager and disable programs that do not need to run at login.
  5. Install pending Windows updates, then restart once more.

Do not wait

A drive stuck near 100% usage, a fan that never quiets down, or clicking sounds point to a deeper problem. Back up your files and ask David.
