Quick fix

Do I Really Need Windows Updates?

Yes. Updates fix security holes and stability problems, and skipping them is one of the most common ways otherwise healthy computers become vulnerable. Here is how to do them without drama.

  1. Back up important files first, especially before a major update.
  2. Install updates when offered (Settings → Windows Update) instead of postponing for weeks.
  3. Restart when asked. A restart finishes the update and avoids odd problems from half-applied changes.
  4. After a major update, check your default apps and browser. Updates sometimes reset them, which makes it look like something broke.
  5. Keep your browser and major apps updated too, and remove browser extensions you no longer use.

Do not wait

If an update is stuck, keeps failing, or the computer will not start afterward, ask David before trying repairs.
